  2. Using American Express cards in Italy - Rick Steves Travel Forum

    community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy/using-american-express-cards-in-italy

I was in Florence and Milan the first week of January. I also prefer to use my American Express card, but always carry a Visa just in case. Between hotels, museum entries (pre-booked and walk-in), restaurants, trains, taxis, and miscellaneous shopping, I probably was able to use my AMEX about 75% of time.

  3. american express - accepted in Italy?? - Rick Steves

Amex is accepted widely. Perhaps not as much as Visa or Mastercard in small outlets. All the major places seem to take Amex.

Used to be an American Express office @Spanish Steps in Rome...can't find evidence that it is still there ...

  5. American Express vs. VISA use in Europe - Rick Steves Travel...

    community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/food-drink/american-express-vs-visa-use...

I use my American Express all over the UK, including contactless at fast food places and London transport. Most of the hotels at which I stay in the rest of Europe accept it but I don't use it on the mainland because of its relatively high foreign currency charges. I have 2 zero fee, accepted at all ATMs around Europe Visa and Mastercards.

  6. AMERICAN EXPRESS IN FLORENCE - Rick Steves Travel Forum

    community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy/american-express-in-florence

By the way Frank I found your answer a little patronizing. Here is what Rick wrote in the book "American Express offers all the normal services, but is an easy place to get your train tickets, reservations, supplements (all the same price as at the station) or just information on trains.....". So was I stupid to try to use Am Ex.

  7. American Express in Portugal - Rick Steves Travel Forum

    community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/portugal/american-express-in-portugal

Many places in Lisbon (can’t speak for the rest of Portugal yet) do not accept Amex cards. Have had about 50% success with it.

  8. Mastercard and Visa vs American Express - Rick Steves Travel...

    community.ricksteves.com/.../budget-tips/mastercard-and-visa-vs-american-express

American Express used to have offices everywhere and was the traveler's choice because of the level of service they provided. But no more. Most of their travel offices in Europe have closed. Their higher fees and stricter membership rules for the merchants has resulted in less acceptance in Europe.

  9. American Express accepted in Switzerland - Rick Steves Travel...

    community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/switzerland/american-express-accepted-in...

American Express is not as widely accepted as Mastercard and Visa. Because Amex wants to become more popular they have a deal with most banks that results in customers getting the Amex for free as a second card when they sign up for a Master (or Visa) card. And my bank even gives more points on Amex then MC, so I try to use it as much as possible.

  11. American Express Travellers Checks - Rick Steves Travel Forum

    community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/austria/american-express-travellers-checks

I followed the link Enerson gave, and on that page there is a link to "A Guide to Using Travelers Cheques" (sic). In this 2-page Guide there is a list of countries, which does not list Austria, but it does say "EUROZONE COUNTRIES: Travelers Cheques acceptance in the Eurozone is very limited away from airport locations.
