History. 1892 Straits Settlements stamp. A postal service had been available in Singapore since the contemporary city was founded by Stamford Raffles in 1819. Postal services were first directly organised in Singapore in 1826, and from 1829 rectangular postmarks began to be used on local correspondence.
The Sultanate of Johor was one of the unfederated Malay states. In 1876, a postal service was set up in the sultanate, and stamps of the Straits Settlements were overprinted with a star and crescent. From 1884 to 1891, stamps of the Straits Settlements overprinted "Johore" were used. In 1891, definitive stamps were issued.
Revenue. Malaysia issued its first general duty revenue stamps in 1975, inscribed Hasil Malaysia (Revenue Malaysia) and depicting the country's coat of arms. Three values of $25, $100 and $250 were issued. In 1982, the coat of arms was changed slightly so the set was reissued with the new version. This time $500 and $1000 values were added.
In 1910 new stamps appeared with values of $25 and $500 (although available for postage, their more usual use was fiscal). Around 1983 a plain label was issued to pay the international passenger service charge of $12. Until 1993, other labels denominated $5, $12 or $15 were used.
