82001842. Added to NRHP. October 21, 1982. The Stoughton Main Street Commercial Historic District is a collection of 36 surviving historic business structures in the old downtown of Stoughton, Wisconsin, United States. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. [1] [2]
There are 261 properties and districts listed on the National Register in Dane County, including 10 National Historic Landmarks. 155 of these properties and districts, including 8 of the National Historic Landmarks, are located in the city of Madison; these are listed separately, while the remaining 106 properties and districts are listed below.
The East Side Historic District is a historic neighborhood of Stoughton, Wisconsin of stylish homes built mostly from 1890 to 1915. It was added to the State Register of Historic Places in 1996 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in the following year.
The Stoughton Opera House was originally known as the City Auditorium. It opened on February 22, 1901 with Ullie Akerstrom 's comic play, The Doctor's Warm Reception. During the next 50 years, the Opera House was used for plays, political rallies, temperance speeches, boxing and wrestling matches, high school graduations, and class plays.
The Stoughton-Falk house at 516 S. Page St. is an Italianate-styled cream brick mansion. Luke Stoughton, the city's founder, built the main block of the house in 1856, two stories tall with a hip roof and wide eaves supported by brackets. Stoughton originally had two wings attached to the main block.
