  2. 55 Gallon Drums - Homebrew Talk

The burner and stand built for the 55 gal drum fits the new boiler just fine. No mods needed. The inside seam of course is sanitized during the boil, but I did not like how hard it was sometimes to clean. Other drums may have a different construction and it may not be as much of an issue.

    15. Location. Colorado. Nov 25, 2010. #3. I am using 55 gallon drums for BK and Mash at Bonfire Brewing. We use 3 4500w elements in each of the two boil kettles. I have wrapped all the drums twice with silver bubble wrap insulation and the mash holds temp fine. As for efficiency I am getting between 70 and 75 percent.

  4. Large grain storage - 55 Gallon drum? - Homebrew Talk

    www.homebrewtalk.com/threads/large-grain-storage-55-gallon-drum.703289

FWIW, grain, by volume, is measured by the bushel. A bushel is .8 cu ft. A 55 gal drum displaces approx. 7.5 cu ft which would be about 9 bushels and change. Malted barley, at least the samples I’ve weighed on a test weight scale, weighs 44-45 lbs/bushel. So, a 55 gal drum would hold over 400 lbs of malt, if stored in bulk.

I'm very open to suggestions for the insulation though. I've tried to search for a pre-made drum blanket or insulation, which you'd think would exist for standard size 55 gallon drums... but of course it doesn't. Edit - Oh yeah, I might use a boat oar from my pirogue! We'll see how well my large stainless crawfish boiling paddle works first though.

  7. HDPE 55 Gallon Drums for brewing - Homebrew Talk

I would brew for awhile before considering acquiring a 55 gallon fermenter. It is easy to get carried away early on but brewing is a lot of work. Putting together 45 gallons of wort is no small task. If you grow with the hobby and decide to go further I would all but guarantee you would not choose to ferment in plastic drums.

Aug 27, 2021. #4. JeffersonStateBrewing said: I have used plastic drums in the past for cider and other mashes. They work fine. Never had any oxidizing issues. I used the open top drums with the big lids and sealing rings with good gaskets. Built a stand to get it off the floor. Drilled a hole in the bottom with a bulkhead fitting (3/4 inch ...

  9. 55 gallon steel drum food grade as a fermenter - Homebrew Talk

I can get 55 gallon food grade steel drums for 15 bucks. They are food grade and used to ship apple juice and junk. They are not stainless. My question is can I use these as fermenters or would my sanitizer pit the coating on the inside.

Next step fill with sparge water needed, heat to temp, and so on. for 40 gallon batches, I'll need more than 55 gallons water anyway, so there will be at least 2 iterations of filling the HLT. For those who asked, here's what this is being used on: (The orange thing on the middle drum is a 240V external drum heater for maintaining mash temps)

  11. Fermenting in a 55 gallon food grade plastic drum

We have brewed several pilot batches with a local brewery here using food grade 55 gallon drums. Works like a champ. We fill to the 45 gallon line, sometimes a bit lower if we have a yeast that likes to go gangbusters and rarely if ever have blowoffs.
