That small planet in the background is a basic map of the planet and the marker is your current position. If you are in the South and want to be North, line up the North compass reading. Carefully point up and exit the planet- and try to stay on North. Hit the warp button of about 10 or 15 seconds and stop.

You also have the longitude and latitude coordinates on the lower left of your screen. 0° 0° Is like the starting point on the equator so I guess if you get to 90°N 0° W (or maybe they are swapped W-N) you are probably standing on the North pole. Game-wise you won't find the North Pole. The developers would have to factor in dates, longitude, latitude, axial tilt, wrap-around maps, and a pile of other math they don't have time/inclination to put into the game. Honestly none of that matters. What defines poles is axis, and what defines axis is rotation.
Just go to space and drop back in a polar region. Look at the latitude longitude on your ship. To the left I think. The first number is latitude. If positive you are in the north. Negative, in the south. A simple stupid trick is to look at the little locator on the planet in the discovery tab.
