It served as a product distribution center and mail order facility for Sears, Roebuck & Company, with a retail store on the ground floor.
This is a list of department stores and some other major retailers in the four major corridors of Downtown Los Angeles: Spring Street between Temple and Second ("heyday" from c.1884–1910); Broadway between 1st and 4th (c.1895-1915) and from 4th to 11th (c.1896-1950s); and Seventh Street between Broadway and Figueroa/Francisco, plus a block of Flower St. (c.1915 and after).
The building was created to house the then-separate Eastern (furniture and homeware) and Columbia (apparel) department stores both owned and managed by Adolph Sieroty, who had founded his Los Angeles retail concern as a clock shop at 556 S. Spring St. in 1892. [18] [3] At opening in 1930, the building had 275,650 sq. ft. of floor space.
The west side of the 200 block of South Broadway had a key place in the retail history of Los Angeles from the 1893 through 1917, as it was home to several prominent early department stores such as the Ville de Paris, Coulter's department store from 1905–1917, and J. W. Robinson's "Boston Dry Goods" store from 1895–1915.
