v. t. e. The Tamil script ( தமிழ் அரிச்சுவடி Tamiḻ ariccuvaṭi [tamiɻ ˈaɾitːɕuʋaɽi]) is an abugida script that is used by Tamils and Tamil speakers in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and elsewhere to write the Tamil language. [ 5] It is one of the official scripts of the Indian Republic.
Tamil phonology is characterised by the presence of "true-subapical" retroflex consonants and multiple rhotic consonants. Its script does not distinguish between voiced and unvoiced consonants; phonetically, voice is assigned depending on a consonant's position in a word, voiced intervocalically and after nasals except when geminated. [1]
The Bengali script or Bangla alphabet ( Bengali: বাংলা বর্ণমালা, romanized : Bangla bôrṇômala, Meitei: বেঙ্গলি ময়েক, romanized: Bengali mayek) is the alphabet used to write the Bengali language based on the Bengali-Assamese script, and has historically been used to write Sanskrit within Bengal.
The first three letters, or mātarā vāhakă ("vowel bearer"), are distinct because they form the basis for independent vowels and are not consonants, or vianjană, like the remaining letters are, and except for the second letter aiṛā [note 2] are never used on their own; [31] see § Vowel diacritics for further details.
Traditional Tamil grammar consists of five parts, namely eḻuttu, sol, poruḷ, yāppu, and aṇi. Of these, the last two are mostly applicable in poetry. [ 1] The following table gives additional information about these parts. Eḻuttu (writing) defines and describes the letters of the Tamil alphabet and their classification.
Otherwise, vowels, vocalics, and part-vowels are written as diacritics attached to consonants. Each consonant in Grantha includes an inherent vowel a, so the letter 𑌕 , for example, is pronounced ka. Adding a vowel diacritic modifies the vowel sound, so 𑌕 plus the diacritic 𑌓 , gives the syllable 𑌕𑍋 , ko.
