Now, that is no longer. The clerk just affixes a bar code to the package, scans it, and the tracking number comes out on the receipt. Many folks just toss the receipt, not realizing that. Once the tracking number is printed out, there is no way the USPS can find what it was.

We mailed a damaged baseball bat back to Easton via the postal service. Unfortunately, my husband lost the receipt with the tracking number and Easton said they never received the bat. The Post Office said that they have no way of tracking without the number. And they said that they can not print a duplicate receipt with the tracking number.

The USPS has no official way to get you the tracking number. They don't keep track of the sender and receiver. In the future, I suggest you exchange such information via smartphone immediately so there is no chance for it to get lost.

I live in a condo in NJ and sometimes get this, although usually not from the USPS. I'd get it from FedEx ground or another delivery service. It usually means they can't find the address for some reason. I admit where I live is tough, although it did get better using a GPS after the 2010 census, because the GPS'd every address in the US.

Amazon never uses SurePost for our shipments. Any Amazon delivery marked as "Shipped with USPS" only involves Amazon and USPS, with no involvement from UPS at all. If you only receive a USPS tracking number, it is the Amazon/USPS deal. Anything shipped via UPS SurePost will always have both a UPS (starts with "1Z") and a USPS tracking number.

That's all you need. Proof of delivery can be printed out at home. If you print your own label online (usps.com), you can check a box to get email tracking updates. I didn't like giving them any sense of power to just refuse picking something up or refusing to sign for something. Surprise! Notice arrives in the mail with tracking.

Create an email hub. In theory, USPS could do this. Individuals can register their email addresses for free and opt for a "Do Not Email" just like "Do Not Call" and they can send/receive personal emails for free. To fund it, businesses would have to register their email address and pay a fee.
