This map makes me want an expanded Kanto where the null space is filled with things, even if they are exclusively side stories. Like put a meadow above Celadon city where you could obtain berries, maybe interact with Erika a little, catch some Grass Pokémon (with it expanding to include Johto and Hoenn Grass types post game).

Well thats where you get the Squirtle in Yellow. It was confirmed at E3 to replace the Safari Zone. The Safari Zone would be kind of superfluous anyway, with the entire game using the GO-style catching mechanic. You can even see Mew at the top of the map in the clouds.
