Spelling alphabet. A spelling alphabet ( also called by various other names) is a set of words used to represent the letters of an alphabet in oral communication, especially over a two-way radio or telephone. The words chosen to represent the letters sound sufficiently different from each other to clearly differentiate them.
The symbol derives from the upper case Latin letter L, representing libra pondo, the basic unit of weight in the Roman Empire, which in turn is derived from the Latin word libra, meaning scales or a balance. The pound became an English unit of weight and in England became defined as the tower pound (equivalent to 350 grams) of sterling silver.
The Latin letter 'v' in the transcriptions, seen in the last column, represents the nasal mid central vowel, /ə̃/. The Cherokee character Ꮩ (do) has a different orientation in old documents, resembling a Greek Λ (or barless A) rather than a Latin V as in modern documents. [note 2]
