Sentence diagramming is incredibly useful around here. Lazy kid who doesn't want to revise anything he writes EVER: "I like that sentence. I like the way it sounds." Parent/teacher who believes that good writers make choices; it doesn't just "flow." :001_smile: "Really. Why do you like it?" Kid: "No reason. I just like it."
Also keep in mind that these are helpful but might not be entirely accurate. I used one with the sentences we were diagramming for Classical Writing and there were times that it couldn't figure it out without simplifying it first and there were other times I had to scroll through their possible diagrams to find one that really worked, and still other times it was just wrong.
I used the Mark Twain Media Sentence Diagramming workbook to teach diagramming to my oldest. My 2nd I'm introducing to diagramming on the fly by showing him how to diagram the sentences in MCT's Practice Island. MCT doesn't teach traditional diagramming BTW.
Diagramming was designed specifically for English, so you might have to revise some rules for other languages and maybe even the formatting. It would probably be better to see if there was a version that was created just for the language, or you might use the methods linguists use though I don't know how hard that is to learn.
Parsing is listing each word in the sentence and determining its definition, role, classification, and properties. Diagramming is visually lining up how all the words work together in the sentence. Harvey's, I believe is spread out over 4 years in CW: Homer A&B, and Digenes, Maxim & Chreia. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong :-)

I teach MCT 4 Level analysis first, and then sentence diagramming after the student has finished Practice Town. I think it's best to master finding the parts of speech, parts of the sentence, phrases, and clauses individually before worrying about putting it all together via diagramming.
