José Luis Terrazas founded Grupo Montéz de Durango in 1996. Terrazas, who was born in Durango, Mexico, grew up in Chicago and was a percussionist in the marching band at his high school. He hooked up with a traditional Mexican banda and learned that these groups were very popular in Chicago. The next step was the formation of his own group.

Los Horóscopos de Durango were a regional Mexican band. In their first years, they were a grupero band, but they eventually changed to the duranguense style when the genre was becoming mainstream. They eventually switched to banda. In their last years, their live performances were a mixture of the latter two styles.
Caliente de Durango is a professional baseball team in the Mexican League based in Durango. Their home ballpark is the Estadio Francisco Villa , with a capacity of 6,000 people. The team was established in 2024 after the former Durango's Mexican League franchise, Generales de Durango , was suspended by the league due to its owner's legal problems.
