Patterns are a different matter, pertaining to the placement of cells within the full board. There is a very large number of patterns. In fact it should be difficult to recognize a repeat pattern, especially across tile sets. Try designing your own tile set. It's fun and fiendish.

Zen mode in most games mean it's an endless version, you just play to play. So yes, it should seem never ending, because it is. There should always be a match somewhere. Try the NY Times game Tiles! I have gotten hooked on the new game Tiles, available daily in the NY Times. You can play unlimited with a NYT crossword subscription, but there is a free level of access too (limited # of games per day). It is a pattern matching game, but it has a pretty wide range of difficulty, so there so something for everyone.
Anyhow, the fact that you need to ask that question is my big problem with Tiles -- there IS no way of scoring it. If they told the number of moves of the shortest and/or longest paths to completion, then we could see how well we'd done in comparison. Without that information, it's not a game, it's doodling.
