Hard to compete with that. I think the art fits the vibe of the songs on this album really well, actually. Undertow, Prison Sex, Sober, 4°, Swamp Song. Those all bring up this image when I think of them. Definitely biased however I never thought this art was out of place. Although it obviously is the least interesting of their legendary album ...
This is a bit of a stretch, but bare with me. So I was reading about what certain colours symbolize and noticed some paralells with Tool's album art. Undertow has a primarily red cover, red symbolizes power, energy, and anger, and the music on Undertow fits these characteristics. Next is Ænima, which has a black cover.
Attemped TOOL's Undertow album art I'm far from being an artist but it's a rainy day and I've been wanting to practice drawing more. So I wanted to do a tribute to one of the the greatest albums I've ever heard in my life using a pencil, graphite pencil, and artist pen.
I never knew about this! I just pulled the booklet out of my Undertow CD and held it up to the light. Amazing, thank you. Not entirely sure if the woman lines up correctly to cause those fingerprint-looking smudges though. She seems dead center clasped between the red “ribs” on the front.

Honorable mention to Ænima, that had a lot of cool art, especially the Cam De Leon pieces. I kind of hope Tool, if they do more albums, go in a different direction with their art. Takes me back. Loved album art. My Undertow is the censored barcode version with a note inside to mail something off and get the original artwork. Still waiting for that. Maybe it will show up before the VIP merch.
Aside from a half inch hairline on side b and some warping to the first disc, the records were pretty much near mint. I gave the records a spin clean and tested them on my turntable; aside from a few pops in the first couple of seconds on sides A & B, the album plays flawlessly!!
Of all the Tool songs I like, I get the least from Undertow. Despite this, "worst" is a harsh word. Every Tool album is amazing for its own reason. Undertow really kickstarted the band and it set a bar during 1993's when it originally released. So while I don't like most of the songs off the album, it still has my respect.
The artwork has nothing to do with TOOL, undertow, or undertows artwork The guy who directed the art for it wasn’t even in the band at the time. And it’s a fucking CD. Not vinyl. What’re we doing here 😂
