Change Resolution to 72. Close preview and go back to edit the metadata in Calibre. The cover size should now be at approx 1800 on the height,1200 on the width. Then convert from mobi to mobi. That fixes the new cover size to the metadata. Remove the original mobi and send the new mobi to your kindle via Send to Kindle.
This is a huge simplification. #1 can even include epub converted from mobi, azw3/kf8 or epub2. Most of #1 will be accepted by Amazon. Type #2 is better as an iOS and Android app to have easy distribution. Amazon will accept actual pdfs on Send to Kindle.
There are two Kindle apps for the Mac. The original app (now called Kindle Classic) is basically an outdated version of the PC app and lacks the menu choice I mentioned. The new Kindle app (version 7) is pretty much identical to the iOS app. I don’t have a Mac so I just assumed that it had the same built in send-to-kindle function as the iOS app.

Join Date: Aug 2016. Device: kindle app. Calibre can't "Send-to-Kindle E-Mail". It appears that Calibre can no longer "Send-to-Kindle E-Mail". It has worked correctly in the past using Calibre v2.61 and configured to use my ISP's smtp server. It appears to have stopped working when I upgraded to v2.62.
After Amazon axed mobi/azw, it was between my Kindle looking pretty or the ability to sync reading progress. Looking pretty won. You could always use bookmarks and export your annotations from time to time to keep track of reading positions in case your device craps out on you and you have to start over. Interesting.

Calibre only sends the basic kindle format to your device at his time. And it is my understanding that if you send epub then it s converted to one of the kindle formats before it is downloaded to your kindle. If you select epub as an allowed format for your Kindle, it will not be converted.
