Shepheard's Hotel was the leading hotel in Cairo and one of the most celebrated hotels in the world from the middle of the 19th century until its destruction in 1952 during the Cairo Fire. Five years after the original hotel was destroyed, a new one was built nearby and named the Shepheard Hotel.
Al-Ahram ( Arabic: الأهرام; lit.'The Pyramids' ), founded on 5 August 1876, is the most widely circulating Egyptian daily newspaper, and the second oldest after Al-Waqa'i' al-Misriyya ( The Egyptian Events, founded 1828). [2] It is majority owned by the Egyptian government, and is considered a newspaper of record for Egypt.
Al Ahram Hebdo was established in 1994 [2] by the Al Ahram publishing house which also owns Al-Ahram newspaper, an English-language version, and Al Ahram Weekly. [3] The paper which is published weekly [4] is based in Cairo. [5] Egyptian writer Mohamed Salmawy was the first of Al-Ahram Hebdo editors-in-chief.
The independent electronic magazine Arab West Report provides weekly summary translations and reviews of these media in English in order for a Western public to better understand the wide variety of opinions one finds in Egyptian print media.
At the age of 17 he left Egypt for the UK, where he obtained a first class honours BA in English and Philosophy from Hull University in 1998. On his return he joined the staff of Al-Ahram Weekly, the Cairo-based English-language newspaper, where he has worked regularly since 1999.

Mohamed Hassanein Heikal ( Arabic: محمد حسنين هيكل ; 23 September 1923 – 17 February 2016) was an Egyptian journalist. For 17 years (1957–1974), he was editor-in-chief of the Cairo newspaper Al-Ahram and was a commentator on Arab affairs for more than 50 years. [1]
