Under the terms of the Peace of Riga Minsk was handed to Soviet Russia and became the capital of the Byelorussian SSR, one of the constituent republics of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. During World War I, the Russian Revolution and the Polish-Bolshevik war, Minsk suffered significant damage.
