Note: Open System Preferences, select the Keyboard tab and click on the Input Sources option. You should then see your keyboard and the option to show the input option in the menubar.

Try shift-alt -8 - °. Strictly speaking alt-sero isn't a degree symbol but is used in some romance languages to mean a part (such as 2º part = 2nd part).
