Metacritic/opencritic don't cover most of the smaller releases or indy games I play, so they're effectively useless to me. I read reviews by individual sites I know to be consistently well-written, like RPS or Eurogamer. Steam reviews are informative if you read the text rather than simply going by the aggregate.
I find platform specific scores in metacritic doesn't really provide any more accurate data towards that version, they're just reflections of those odd platform-centric outlets that only cover one version of a game. Opencritic is just cleaner, and much easier to look at. Metacritic is one of the worst designed sites.
Metacritic was one of the largest sites for review for a long time and some still use them. A Metacritic score also existed before Steam Reviews did. It is always better to have multiple sources as well. Not everyone likes the review system on Steam either and may want a different system to check on a game's score.
