Golfito is a district and port town of the Golfito canton, in the Puntarenas province of Costa Rica, located on the southern Pacific Coast, near the border of Panama.

The inlet starts on the Pacific Ocean side of Costa Rica and extends slightly northward before turning west. The most westward part is at the city of Rincon.
One study off Santa Catalina Island found that over 13–25 hours, nine sharks together used only 1.5 km 2 (0.6 mi 2). A later, longer-term study found that the sharks' sporadic position changes covered as much as 75 km (47 mi) over three months, almost circling the island. Single individuals swam up to 7.3 km (4.5 mi) in a night.
Misión Tiburón is a non profit organisation established in 2009, based on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Founded by marine biologists and conservationists Ilena Zanella and Andres Lopez, the organisation focuses on marine research concerning sharks, sea turtles and rays as well as education programs targeted at local coastal communities.
Golfito was created on 10 June 1949 by decree 532. Geography. Golfito has an area of 1,753.96 km² and a mean elevation of 24 metres. The canton encompasses the southernmost Pacific coast of Costa Rica, north from Punta Gorda Hill at the Panama border.
