Sun Dec 22, 2019 9:49 am. WRIF was fun when JJ & The Morning Crew (George Baier doing the voices) , Karen Savelly, Steve "The Kid" Kostan, Mark Addy, Nick Demos, when Drew & Mike ruled mornings, and of course Arthur Penthallow, on summer days blowing the foghorn telling you to roll over while tanning and yelling "Baby"!!
1992 was the time that WCSX and WRIF were owned by two different companies. I read that WRIF almost went away in the late 1980's to become a competitor to FM 98 WJLB. Both WCSX and WLLZ were beating WRIF in the ratings in 1992. If the Drew and Mike Morning Show was not there at the time, they might have switched to Country before 99.5 WYCD did.
As I type this, WRIF is playing Gorillaz "Feel Good Inc", a song I've NEVER EVER heard on Riff before. I've also heard stuff like Blink-182, who I only remember playing "Adam's Song" in early 2000. I'll admit, I'm liking the more "alternative" songs Riff has been playing of late.
What years did WRIF have the “Rock ‘n Stereo brand along with a handful of other ABC owned FM’s such as WDAI 94.7 in Chicago, WPLJ 95.5 in New York City and KLOS 95.5 in Los Angeles. I’m thinking it was 1973 to around 1977.
WRIF shitty signal. by MWmetalhead » Sat Oct 05, 2024 9:13 pm. Reception was virtually non-existent in the Flint area Friday afternoon en route to West Michigan. 97.1 and 95.5 came in decently, WOMC and WDET (!!!) came in well, and even 98.7 & 106.7 each had a somewhat receivable signal, but 101.1 was 90% fuzz / 10% audible signal.
WRIF Dick The Bruiser (1979) by matt1 » Fri Jan 29, 2021 11:23 pm. I am looking for a song that WRIF's Dick The Bruiser did called "The Pig Out" & "Pay" (Jackson Browne 1978 songs "The Load Out" & the remake of "Stay" from 1978 "Running On Empty") back around 1979 because I cannot find it on YouTube. After those songs were done, he does a ...
I feel like WLLZ was playing the "harder rock" of the two. I could be wrong, but in the 80s, WLLZ was quicker to play stuff like Twisted Sister, Motley Crue, GNR, Poison, etc., whereas WRIF was playing more Robert Plant, Don Henley, Billy Joel, stuff like that. I don't remember too much prior to 1991 or so.
Kelly Walker was 100x more talented than some of the female jocks who grace rock radio airwaves today, especially a certain middayer at WRIF. Radio was so much better in the mid and late 90s than now. No Gnyp in that aircheck anywhere. He was already working at 89X.
This is a story about someone you may not have thought much about, until now. Pete Gustin has been the voice of RIFF since around 2009.
