The first Rand McNally Travel Store was opened in New York City in 1937. In the 1990s it became a chain with 29 locations, but by 2005 all were closed as a cost-saving measure. The book name was dropped to just Thomas Guide and colors changed to match Rand McNally colors and product line releases. William H. Rand. William H. Rand. William Henry Rand (May 2, 1828 – June 20, 1915) was an American printer and co-founder of the Rand McNally publishing company. He was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, and as a young man was an apprentice at his brothers' print shop in Boston. He was enticed west in September 1849, by the California Gold Rush.
