So I installed them all, latest versions on Windows 10. Pea and 7 are both free, the WinRar and WinZip are evaluation. I haven't tested compression but I am just looking at the user interfaces. PeaZip is made to look like Windows Explorer, while WinRar and 7-Zip have a more simple old-school interface. WinZip is by far the most obtrusive.

Windows does not handle .rar, files, so you need 3rd party software to open them. If you are making an archive, WinRAR gives a ton more options than Windows does, including file type, split archives, and recovery files.

I don't know about Windows 11, but the .zip files made by Windows 10 weren't always fully compatible with other zip tools, notably the zip tools provided with OSX. In the modern era, I don't take the chance and use tools that I have faith will yield good results - either 7zip or WSL. I also find the CRC tools in 7-Zip handy.

  7. 7zip or WinRar - Which One? : r/Windows11 - Reddit

Granted. the author of 7zip is most likely rocking Windows 10 out until its end of life and then go for Windows 11 and try to figure out the new Context Menu API from there. Reply reply More replies

no. winrar uses what's called lossless compression. you can compress and decompress all you want, since the main goal of winrar is to compress/decompression unspecific types of files. jpg uses lossly compression, you can only compress, you can't decompress because the data needed is gone.

Will need to see the manner in which they implement it, but I suspect it's going to be missing all the bells and whistles that we usually get from 7zip or Winrar, like password-protected archives, archive splitting, sfx creation, ability to choose the compression algorithm to best suit your data type, custom dictionary sizes, etc.
