The UCR reporting system collects information on seven crimes classified as Index offenses which are most commonly used to gauge overall crime volume. These include the violent crimes of murder/non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault; and the property crimes of burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft.
County Crime Rates. The overall crime rate of a county is calculated by dividing the total number of Index crimes submitted by police agencies in each county by the county’s population and multiplying the result by 100,000. The U.S. Census Bureau is the source of county population data.

Our dependent variable is the crime rate. The data is from the USA Census 2020 Redistricting Census Designated Places. Our independent variable for each of the counties in Long Island in 2019 and 2021 is from the County Index Crime Rates in New York State.

This research will focus on median income and how it correlates to crime in Long Island, NY. While crime is relevant in New York there are sections of Long Island that have more crime than others. This area was chosen because it is on the outskirts of New York City.
