Fix: when the app is in windowed state (not maximized, not on the taskbar) [and when you can't view it because it is off the screen,] press Alt+Spacebar then M.     It might be cropped. Double click on the picture with the left mouse button and see if the crop icon appears in the top ribbon. Otherwise click on the picture to select it, this will launch the picture tools tab, click format and to the left in the adjustments group click the drop down arrow on the reset icon and select reset picture and size.

    Restarting Powerpoint or the PC, or working with Powerpoint started in safe mode, does not help. I can only save that file if I undo enough many steps (and thus lose a lot of work). That 'critical' step in the undo list beyond which saving is possible is however nothing fancy, e.g. just inserting some text.
