The US Topo series is a latest generation of topographic maps modeled on the USGS historical 7.5-minute series (created from 1947-1992). Like the historical topographic mapping collection, we've added a variety of file formats previously unavailable for the US Topo series, including GeoTIFF and KMZ.
KMZ – The KMZ format is a compressed form of the KML format which is used for displaying the maps in Google Earth. Metadata – GeoTIFF downloads for both HTMC and US Topo maps come bundled with an XML metadata file.
US Topo maps include base data from The National Map and other sources, including roads, hydrography, contours, boundaries, woodland cover, structures, geographic names, an aerial photo image, Federal land boundaries, and shaded relief.
Under the US Topo program, 1:24,000-scale topographic maps are produced by entirely digital methods, on a three-year replacement cycle. The NGP is accurately cataloging and creating metadata to accompany high-resolution, georeferenced digital files of each of these printed maps.

USGS topographic maps originally published as paper documents in the period 1884-2006 have been scanned and can be downloaded free of charge through topoView. The US Topo project repackages data from national GIS databases as traditional maps, primarily for the benefit of non-GIS users.
