I have three older Minis marked .223 that I bought years ago and have shot thousands of rounds of 5.56. I did call Ruger before doing so and was assured it was fine to do so.

Keep in mind the big disadvantage is that unlike other models of the Mini 14, the target model can only shoot 223 ammo. So no using 556 as well, as is the case with the regular rifle. As a competition rifle it might make sense, but I don't think it does in many other circumstances. I have several Rugers, most recently adding a Ruger American ...

  6. Difference Between the mini-14 Ranch and regular | Ruger Forum

    www.rugerforum.net/threads/difference-between-the-mini-14-ranch-and-regular.49338

The main difference is the receivers. The Mini-14 has a rear sight that resembles the sight found on an M1 Garand or M14 and no easy way to mount a scope without additional hardware. The Mini-14 ranch rifle has a Lyman style dovetail peep sight and details in the top of the receiver to accept Ruger scope rings. OK, I saw some images to compare.

Prices on them have risen substantially in the last few years, while AR-15 prices have plummeted. I would be surprised if Ruger sells many Mini's these days. Be surprised then.

It is about the same concept, but without the dampener. I like the added weight to the front cause it helps me steady my shots when I have to shoot free handed.

  9. Mini 14 Target Rifle - Ruger Forum

My friend is a major Ruger wholesaler/retailer, and in his store today, he had a Mini 14 Target Rifle. Stainless steel, no sights (looks like the Ranch Rifle), composite thumbhole stock, bull barrel, and here's the kicker -- a finely threaded muzzle with a huge, fat flash suppressor attached to the end; so big, in fact, it looked like a sound ...

  10. Advice from experienced Mini 14 owners on new gun accuracy

  11. Resolved controversy of the use of 5.56 mm NATO in Ruger Mini-14

    www.rugerforum.net/threads/resolved-controversy-of-the-use-of-5-56-mm-nato-in...

Ruger SR-556, AR-556, and Mini-14 can safely shoot 223 Remington, 5.56x45, or 5.56 NATO ammo ... the exception being a Mini-14 Target Model, which is strictly a 223 Rem or Mini-14s that were made before 1981, which can shoot 5.56x45 or 223 Rem. This makes a lot of sense because the NATO standard came in 1980 or thereabouts.
