Merced Theatre was founded in 1870, as the first theater in the city. Los Angeles grew into a major tourist spot in the late 1800's with the establishment of new transportation networks, and hotels. This includes the Mount Lowe Resort and Railway which was a popular location at the time for both its location in Los Angeles and many attractions.
