A credit freeze stops new accounts from being opened; however, a credit lock is a service from the credit bureaus that lets you lock and unlock your credit faster than a freeze. Basically, you create an account with each of the three credit bureaus (Experian, Transunion, and Equifax) and place a permanent freeze on your credit.
Aside from the main three credit bureaus (TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax), the most important ones to freeze or place extended fraud alerts with are ChexSystems and NCTUE. The TransUnion Credit Freeze Service is temporarily unavailable. I've called twice, and both times I've called, I have been told that: the issue comes from a split file that means your information is divided into 2 files and that happens when one of your creditors reported your information wrong and twice.
The credit is unfrozen on the date you enter (can be same day you are entering the unfreeze) and refrozen at midnight on the date you refreeze. But I attempted to make an account with TransUnion today and I was unable to make the account because of an identity verification issue. I called the phone number they provided and I got in touch with an agent. It seemed she couldn't do anything but she asked what I needed and I said I needed a credit freeze.
I’ve been trying to freeze and unfreeze my Transunion credit file online for months and have been unable to do so. I keep getting the below message 👇. I’ve had to call customer service during their scheduled hours and wait for a rep. This is inconvenient and unacceptable. Is anyone else experiencing this same issue for months now? TIA
