There is one thing you can try to see unread emails. I recommend you to enable unread email first on the page. For this. Open Gmail account. Go to Settings on Gear icon. Up until two days ago, my "Inbox" in Gmail has only shown unread emails at the top, with the read ones being shown somewhere near the bottom. For some reason, this has changed. While my "Inbox" tab still shows "32" next to it, on the right hand side I can now see all emails, including unread ones.

Tab 1: pick an unread email. Tab 2: check it appears in is:unread. Tab 1: read it. Tab 2: check it disappears from is:unread. Confirmed, as of 1-30-14, is:unread category:primary works. I think I've been using is:unread category:primary-inbox for a while but I think they just discontinued it, because it wasn't working for me today.
I'm using the Priority Inbox, and want to add a Section with only unread messages from a label. The section dropbox allows me to select a label, but shows all messages in the label (including read ones). Earlier I was using the "Multiple Inboxes" from Gmail Labs which allows for creation of an Inbox section using a custom search.
