The order of the alphabet (strictly abugida) in Tamil closely matches that of the nearby languages both in location and linguistics, reflecting the common origin of their scripts from Brahmi. Tamil language has 18 consonants - mey eluttukkal. Traditional grammarians have classified these 18 into three groups of 6 letters each.

Traditional Tamil grammar consists of five parts, namely eḻuttu, sol, poruḷ, yāppu, and aṇi. Of these, the last two are mostly applicable in poetry. Vowel letters are used rather than diacritics, and they occur after consonants in their spoken order. The last two letters, ⠰ ṉ and ⠷ ḻ, are shared with Malayalam, but otherwise ⠰ ṉ is used for the anusvara (nasalization) in other Bharati alphabets, while ⠷ ḻ is also used in Urdu Braille but for the unrelated letter ʻayn.
Tamil has a numeric prefix for each number from 1 to 9, which can be added to the words for the powers of ten (ten, hundred, thousand, etc.) to form multiples of them. For instance, the word for fifty, ஐம்பது (aimpatu) is a combination of ஐ (ai, the prefix for five) and பத்து (pattu, which is ten).
