The Washington Huskies football team represents the University of Washington in college football. Washington competed in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as a member of the Big Ten Conference , after having been a charter member of the Pac-12 Conference until the end of the 2023-2024 season.
The 1991 team is considered to be the best Washington Husky football team and among the best in college football history. The team went undefeated, winning against opponents by an average score of 42–9 in regular season, including wins over No. 9 Nebraska, No. 7 California and a 34–14 win over No. 4 Michigan in the Rose Bowl. The final change to the school name came in 1977 when the school was renamed 'Eastern Washington University'. In 1973, the student body voted to make Eastern's mascot the 'Eagles'. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] Shortly before that, the Eastern Board of Trustees declared 'Savages', its mascot through its first 92 years, no longer acceptable.
Washington State and Idaho renewed their dormant football rivalry in 1998, and matched up annually in the Battle of the Palouse for a decade. The game was played at Martin Stadium in September, although the 2003 game was played far from the Palouse, 300 miles (500 km) west at year-old Seahawks Stadium, now known as Lumen Field , in Seattle . The team played as the Washington Football Team for two seasons before rebranding as the Commanders in 2022. Washington won the 1937 and 1942 NFL championship games and Super Bowls XVII, XXII, and XXVI. Washington has finished a season as league runner-up six times, losing the 1936, 1940, 1943, and 1945 title games and Super Bowls VII and XVIII.
The latter has shown the greatest decline, due to an association with the Washington Redskins name controversy. Since the NFL team began the process of changing its name to the Washington Commanders, twelve high schools previously using the name also changed. Snell Middle School in Bayard, New Mexico also dropped the name. [22]
