Delaware History of Milton “MILTON, only 7 miles from the Delaware Bay in a direct line but many more by the convoluted Broadkill, is one of the little old Delaware towns that prospered through shipbuilding and shipping in the 19 century.
Milton´s history is written in its streets, its architecture, its relationship to the Broadkill River, its industrial heritage, and its image and reputation throughout Delaware and beyond. The area was first settled in prehistoric times by the Leni Lenape and Nanticoke Indians.
Milton is located about fifteen miles from the popular Atlantic Ocean resort of Rehoboth Beach. Its population of approximately 2,700 persons is diverse – with a mixture of retirees from large East Coast cities and many young and middle-aged families with deep roots in Sussex County.

John Collier, Mayor. Current Term 2022-2025. Email: mayorcollier@ci.milton.de.us. John Collier is a resident of Delaware since 1957, oldest son of a military family, who grew up in Wyoming, DE. He is married to Milton native Cathy Reed Collier. He and Cathy returned to her hometown of Milton in October 2001.
Demographics. As of the census of 2020, there were 3,291 people, 1,363 households, and 513 married-couple families residing in the town. The older population of residents over 65 years and older is 30.2%, and residents with a bachelor’s degree or higher is 43.9%.

The Department is currently made up of three employees. The department has many responsibilities with the continual growth and development of the Town. Some responsibilities include: Handles code enforcement. Manages business licenses. Processes building permits. Performs construction site inspections.
The Town of Milton is well-situated to provide a vast array of outdoor activities. There are three public fishing areas in town – two with boat launch ramps. From these access points, you can enjoy both Wagamon’s Pond and the Broadkill River.
