I just did a search as well, and when the search tab pops up with emails containing the keyword, those old emails are included and I can read their content.

Thunderbird doesn't have a cache. How recently have you compacted your folders? Compacting is something that needs to be done regularly in any email program. We recommend weekly, but many of us do it daily. When done often enough, it can be an extremely fast process. Not doing so can lead to problems like those you are experiencing.

This fix worked for me-. To stop Thunderbird from asking for password every time you send an email, do this: In Thunderbird, click Tools, Account Settings, and in left pane, click "Outgoing Server". Click Edit. Under "Security and Authentication" DESELECT "Use name and password". Click OK and again OK.

Note that webmail doesn't use the mail servers (it normally just uses some shared libraries) so you don't want to read too much into it if you see a performance problem in Thunderbird ...
