June 14, 1984 (Southeast shore of Mott Island: Isle Royale National Park: The Algoma was a passenger steamer built in 1883. In November 1885, it ran into a blinding snowstorm, veered off course, and ran aground near Isle Royale.
Local resort owners advocated for the establishment of a national park on the island, hoping that would increase tourism. In 1936, the federal government began to purchase private property on Isle Royale, for the purpose of creating a national park. The National Park Service took over operation of some resorts in the area.
