The longest highway of any type in Utah is U.S. Route 89 at 502.577 miles (808.819 km). The shortest state route is State Route 231, a 0.085 miles (0.137 km) connector route in Fairview, though this route is unsigned. The shortest signed route is State Route 103 at 0.225 miles (0.362 km) long, connecting Hill Air Force Base to I-15 and SR-126 .
The State Highway System was created in 1918 with the first State Bond Issue (SBI) Routes, 1 through 46. Bonds were floated to pay for specific routes. SBI # 1 paid for Route 1, and so on. In Nevada, the original 1913 highway entered on county roads west of Ibapah, Utah near the Pony Express stop of Eightmile, Nevada, and then past the ghost towns of Tippett and Schellbourne. At what is now U.S. Route 93, the Lincoln Highway turned south, passing through McGill to Ely.

Illinois State Bond Issue Route 4 was the first numbered through route between Chicago and St. Louis, as shown on the 1924 Illinois Road Map. As such it was the forerunner of more famous routes US 66 and Interstate 55. In 1926, a new alignment for Route 4 was opened between Joliet and Lyons, on the north side of the Des Plaines River.
