    The district was preceded by the second ward, first established in 1870 when the city was first incorporated. During the ward system in place from 1870 to 1889, it elected three (four from 1874 to 1878) to the Los Angeles Common Council. The second ward included the northern part of Los Angeles that wasn't included in the 1st ward.
