The Lincoln Highway crossed Prairie Creek in southwestern Platte County, Nebraska on this bridge. This is part of a 1.2-mile (2.0 km) section of the highway that is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Traveling westward from the Douglas Street Bridge. West to 18th or 24th Street depending on year.
Kankakee to Fairfield, replaced by US-45. Reused in the 1930s on current route. Originally Freeport to Polo, extended north to the state line to replace IL-74 and south to Bureau then E. Peoria replacing IL-89 and IL-87 in part. Rerouted to the I-180 bridge in the 1990s due to a bridge removal over the Illinois River.
The State Highway System was created in 1918 with the first State Bond Issue (SBI) Routes, 1 through 46. Bonds were floated to pay for specific routes. SBI # 1 paid for Route 1, and so on. Secretary Howard M. Gore appointed the Joint Board on Interstate Highways, as recommended by AASHO, on March 2, 1925. The Board was composed of 21 state highway officials and three federal Bureau of Public Roads officials. At the first meeting, on April 20 and 21, the group chose the name "U.S. Highway" as the designation for the routes.
