I usually have 6 owls for a male female pair of gachas. Then you need to feed the gachas, stone, seeds, stone arrows ect to get them to produce. I use stone arrows. I have had the best results with them and they dont take up much weight on the gacha. Buff the crafting up to 150+ so that you are getting the max return per crystal.
Eurypterids also drop a few black pearls, and tend to cluster in the super dense sea grass near silica pearl caves on the island. I usually don't even see them, I just rake my tuso's tentacles through the grass on my way to hunt alphas. It typically kills like 6 or so, and nets 5-15 extra black pearls. Alpha tusos drop the most though.

The don't drop black pearls like they do with silica pearls. I have no idea if it might apply to underwater pearl deposits or the ones by the element river in Aberration, but you can't harvest them with a phoenix on official since you'd need some kind of mod or admin command. Most likely deathworms.
