I'm a Canadian citizen with a Canadian passport. I booked a flight with American Airlines to Mexico City From Toronto Pearson and it says that "Passenger details are needed to check in". Flight 1: YYZ -> DFW -> MEX Flight 2: MEX -> DFW -> YYZ . They already took my name, gender and such. It is now asking for my passport number and expiry date.
United Airlines will absolutely let a US Permanent Resident (Green Card holder) check-in online for a flight to the US - although it is not always successful. For this to be successful you will need to meet a few conditions. United will have to have "scanned" your current passport on a previous trip.

On PMUA website after you checkin for the flight and need to cancel, you just click on the checkin link again, and then select "cancel". On the new website it appears that after you checkin for the flight the checkin button is gone, and I can't find a way to undo the checkin.
CO.com never offered this feature and it's carried over to the new UA.com right now. The only way to un-checkin is via the phone. Most agents on the phone should know how to do it but you'll need a pmCO agent to really help you; pmUA agents will likely ask you to hold while they figure it out. -RM.
